As a collaborative member of the healthcare team, the Chaplain provides spiritual care; participates in departmental activities, denominational and community relationships; performs all duties in ways promoting organizational and departmental missions and values.
ResponsibilitiesPlans and organizes daily spiritual care for persons in assigned areas.
Through personal contacts and data evaluations, develops and initiates spiritual care plans, charting when appropriate, for all patients.
Provides spiritual care to staff and families.
May coordinate spiritual care for other areas as back-up assistance to other chaplains throughout Legacy.
Shares responsibility for pastoral requests within 15-30 minutes after notification for trauma, crisis and emergency ministry.
Evaluates the patient and situation with appropriate follow-up ministry within specified time.
Initiates a cooperative consultation with hospital/medical staff for immediate or deferred ministry response within specified time.
Initiates, responds, follows up and cooperates with hospital and other team members for comprehensive and continuum of care of persons.
Participates in unit meetings and/or clinical consultations when applicable with hospital staff.
May initiate and respond to consultations among chaplaincy staff.
Provides worship opportunities, rites and sacraments for patients, families and staff.
Prepares and leads scheduled interfaith worship using appropriate materials when applicable.
Provides or arranges sacraments and rites according to spiritual preferences and within time limits.
Responds sensitively to requests for worship development and leadership for employees seeking support following loss of fellow-employee, as well as other community/employee concern, or cause for celebration, if no full-time staff chaplain is available or with department consent.
Pastoral care is available for all hospital personnel according to established departmental guidelines.
Offers sensitive and supportive ministry to hospital staff, physicians, volunteers and students.
Consults appropriately with community clergy, congregations and agencies, as related to ministry with patients and families.
Responds promptly to requests from clergy and community sources for spiritual care of patients and families.
Refers, with patient consent, spiritual care opportunities to chaplains, outside clergy, and community resources, respecting confidentiality and right to privacy issues.
Serves as pastoral resource for educational programs of department, hospital and community when applicable.
Contributes to pastoral education programs within hospital.
Offers expertise for hospital educational programs.
Maintains professional and personal expertise and growth.
Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Keeps current with policies and procedures for effective functioning.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's Degree required.
Professional Theological Degree, e.g. M.Div., MTS, BD, desirable, and/or one unit of ACPE Certified Clinical Pastoral Education, or equivalent, required, with one year ACPE Certified Clinical Pastoral Education desirable.
Experience:
One year of full-time Pastoral experience, or equivalent.
Skills:
Spiritual perspectives and sensitivity to persons in stress.
Ability to listen well and speak with individuals and small groups.
Theological competence.
Skill with interdisciplinary team cooperation.
Excellent communication skills.
Skill with interfaith cooperation.
Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
