SUMMARY:
The Health Education Consultant provides nutrition education and physical activity promotion lessons, and other health related programming as needed, for elementary and secondary students in multiple school communities within the Marquette-Alger RESA service area and throughout the central Upper Peninsula. Due to the dynamic, grant-based nature of the health programs offered, the Consultant’s program focus may change throughout the year. Sample programs include: General health - Michigan Model for Health; Nutrition - PE-Nut & PEP; Prevention - Botvin LifeSkills, Guiding Good Choices, and Prime for Life
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor's degree in one of the following areas: health education, elementary/secondary education, nutrition, sustainability, agriculture, environmental science, prevention or other health related field
- Experience in education, nutrition education and physical activity promotion, local food systems, youth social-emotional learning, or other related field preferred with a focus on K-12 students
- Valid MI driver's license and proof of insurance
- Demonstrated ability to be organized, self-motivated and enthusiastic
- Technology skills in word processing, spreadsheet use, and data collection
- Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills
- Strong presentation skills with both students and adults
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
- Valid ServSafe certification, or able/willing to obtain
- Knowledge of Upper Peninsula food Systems
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver high quality, engaging program presentations for both youth and adult groups, utilizing the designated/approved curriculum
- Teach nutrition lessons to elementary school students in the Central Upper Peninsula based on training provided
- Teach land-based learning process to high school students based on curriculum and training provided
- Promote physical activity according to established program guidelines
- Manage classroom while teaching lessons
- Shop for, prep, store, and serve food items needed for lessons; ServSafe training will be provided as required
- Use home/school kitchen to prepare/store food for lessons and other events
- Transport and haul class materials, set-up and take-down classes, clean-up rooms and sites
- Provide youth prevention/social-emotional skill lessons as needed
- Plan for, organize, and present at classroom teacher trainings
- Distribute goods/supplies/materials to classrooms, teachers, and students
- Recruit and schedule schools and classes for participation in programming
- Plan and implement an independent schedule to meet project strategies and outcomes
- Create and maintain respectful and trustful relationships with school administrators, classroom teachers, and students
- Collaborate with, and serve as a resource to, building administrators and staff
- Use social media to promote programs and trainings
- Support students in writing mini-grant proposals
- Serve as a liaison between program and community, as needed
- Engage and provide information to community residents, partners, and community agencies about the initiatives and activities at community health fairs, events, and other outreach opportunities
- Attend and participate in regular meetings and trainings
- Cooperate with Project Manager and Evaluator to gather assessments from teachers, parents, and students, as well as farmers and foodservice directors
- Communicate/respond to all grant-related communications in a timely manner
- Assist in coordination, execution, and reporting of school-wide events
- Maintain/submit appropriate records, expense reports, and documentation as requested
- Compile, analyze and summarize data and information for program reporting requirements
- Assist with preparing materials for grant applications and reporting
- Publicize and recruit for events for maximum participation; secure media coverage of events as appropriate
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Ability to use observational data and formative assessments to guide professional learning and coaching
- Ability to integrate emerging forms of technology into professional activities and public presentations
- Ability to develop positive and supportive relationships with classroom teachers, administrators, and staff
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Must effectively orchestrate multiple activities/projects simultaneously to accomplish goals, use resources effectively, and maintain proactive communication with stakeholders
- Must demonstrate a high degree of organization and efficient time management
- Must successfully adapt/function independently within a variety of school districts
- Proficiency in computer/software use including Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Perform position duties and functions while upholding confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information
- Position requires RESA job travel using personal vehicle
- Must meet the requirements and follow the guidelines specified by any grants or other funding sources supporting/associated with the position.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds
- Position routinely requires travel to local school districts in Marquette and Alger counties, and possible assignments within other counties in the Upper Peninsula; Requires occasional overnight travel to other areas of the state
- Mileage and travel reimbursements are available through grants for required job travel
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : Grant funded position offering approximately 181 days of employment annually. Must have regular and reliable attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job

COMPENSATION: According to Michigan Education Association (MEA) Bargaining Unit Scale
