Summary It is the responsibility of the Librarian/Library Media Specialist to function as a leader in the learning community of the school by collaborating with faculty and staff to prepare students with information and technological literacy skills for lifelong independent learning. The Librarian/Library Media Specialist shall administer the library/media program in conformance with professional library standards and principles as well as local and state policies. This includes but is not limited to supervising students; answering reference questions; serving as a readers' advisor; instructing individuals and classes; serving as a curriculum resource for staff; and cataloging materials. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Plans and administers a well-rounded school library media program based on local and state policies and standardsManages use of the library administrative and instructional software, hardware, and network to enhance library servicesEstablishes a collection development plan to meet the needs of teachers and a diverse student populationManages resources and hardware required to provide easy access to informationPrepares and administers federal, state, and local budgets as appropriatePrepares required reportsMaintains a functional, attractive, and welcoming environmentManages student behavior to maintain an environment conducive to learningMaximizes the amount of time available in the library media center by establishing flexible access policies and proceduresMaintains appropriate and required records, inventories, and filesTrains, directs, and supervises volunteers, and student assistantsDevelops and implements an on-going program of public relationsPerforms other duties as assigned by the principalServes as a school leader in the evaluation, acquisition, and utilization of traditional and technological resourceWorks with administrators, teachers, parents, community libraries, and others to provide access to varied information sources to meet students' needs.Demonstrates to students, staff, and others strategies for accessing and utilizing information from traditional and technological resourcesPromotes the ethical and legal use of informationMaintains a collection of up-to-date professional materials for staffProvides instruction for students and staff in the effective use of hardware and software necessary to obtain information in any formatProvides instruction for students and staff in the effective use of the media center and its componentsProvides programs and services to encourage lifelong learning through developing students' critical reading, viewing listening, and thinking skillsThe experienced librarian/media specialist plans for professional developmentThe new or beginning librarian/media specialist plans for professional self- developmentMaintains certification and other needed qualificationsTakes and active role in building-level decision makingParticipates in grade-level/subject area curriculum planning and evaluationsServes on professional learning communities, task forces and decision-making committees, when appropriateImplements school improvement planCreates partnerships with parents/caregivers, and colleagues regarding library/media center expectations, student progress, and provides clear and timely information relative to ways they can assist learningEncourages parents/caregivers to become active partners in their children's education and to become involved in school and library/media center activitiesSeeks community involvement in the library/media center program Other Duties Other duties as assigned that are related to the functions of the position. Essential Functions/Qualifications/Requirements Education and Experience: Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university. Must hold a valid Teacher Certificate with Library Science endorsement.
