Organic Chemistry Teaching Lab Assistant (LAB AST 3) Job Summary Under general supervision, provide support to the day-to-day management and maintenance of large teaching laboratories to accommodate and facilitate instructional laboratory operation in support of curriculum. Perform standardized and recurring technical procedures, field experimental procedures as well as a variety of business operations. Provide assistance to laboratory users, perform record keeping, maintain standard supplies for laboratory use, and assure availability of required materials and supplies. Assist with setup and maintenance of laboratory equipment including testing and operation of laboratory equipment. Serve as night supervisor of student teaching assistants. Clean and maintain student laboratories and preparation rooms.

- Knowledge of general and organic chemistry consistent with upper division college level including but not limited to terminology, instrumentation, standard laboratory techniques and laboratory safety.
- Skills to perform standardized and recurring technical tasks.
- Communication skills to interact effectively with a diverse group of students from differing cultures and backgrounds.
- Skills to communicate effectively, efficiently and directly with supervisor(s), co-workers, and student workers.
- Ability to follow safety rules, protocols and established practices.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience supervising students.
- Ability to learn, follow and enforce University policies and procedures regarding laboratory safety.

Department Overview The Chemistry Department is a large and complex academic and research department located in the College of Letters and Science. The department has state and extramural funds with expenditures of approximately $28M annually including $8M in organized research. There are 29 staff members, 40 senate faculty, 3 continuing lecturers, many Federation appointees, Emeritus Faculty, Postdocs, Pre-Six Lecturers, as well as 250 graduate students and 700 undergraduate majors.
Position Information - Salary or Pay Range: $25.51/hr. - $30.37/hr.

Physical Demands - Lift, move and carry boxes weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Sit at computer and use mouse and keyboard for long periods of time.
- Work with frequent interruptions.
Work Environment - Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
- Work occasional overtime.
- During the academic year work evenings and night hours (1:00 pm to 10:00 pm) to meet operational and supervisory needs. At other times work hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- Work a flexible work schedule as we develop new laboratory sections.
